The Spider Web of Life   Throughout the novel, All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren, the characters are constantly feeling the effects of their action later in the book.   Every one of their sinister, sketchy actions were dealt with again later in the book and not in pleasant circumstance.   As Cass Mastern had figured out: †¦the world is like an enormous spider web and if you touch it, however lightly, at any point the vibration ripples to the remotest perimeter and the drowsy spider feels the tingle and is drowsy no more but springs out to fling the gossamer coils about you who have touched the web and then inject the black, numbing poison under your hide.(188-89) This quote is a major theme that is encountered throughout the book.   Jack and the Judge, here is where we mainly see the web at work.   Jack, at the request of Willie, went to dig up dirt on the Judge.   Jack finds so many things out and as he exposes it everything goes wrong, the spider got him.   When Jack reveals his findings to Judge Irwin, his father, he ends up killing himself before Jack has a chance to talk to him father to son.   Although, for the most part, Jack's goal as stated at the beginning of the book was that he was to pursue truth and knowledge, he needed to leave this alone because it was a pursuit of knowledge, but it had no positive motive behind it, and, as we have encountered in previous books throughout the year and throughout this one, truth is not always a good and noble thing.   In this case the truth led to what destroyed the Judge and Jack was pursuing the truth.   The Cass Mastern story provides an interesting parallel to the ongoing saga of Jack Burden and Willie Stark.   Cass is tormented, as Jack is, by the truth and this drives them both to the brink only Cass falls over and can not recover.   Cass hit the spider web when he committed adultery with his good friends wife and after this the venom never seemed to stop flowing.   He could not stop tormenting himself because the ripple in the web he caused had been so huge that it swallowed up his friend and destroyed him.   Cass could not correct what had been done and that destroyed him.   Jack, even though his ripple had also destroyed another, had the opportunity to redeem himself because, even though his action was bad, it truly was in the pursuit of the truth, which, by definition is good.

I am very distressed about living in this dreadful place. I absolutely hate it; I can’t believe we moved from the best house EVER!!! With 5 floors if you included the basement and the top floor with the window where if I stand on the end of my toes I could see the whole of Berlin, to this place which I’m pretty sure is the worst house ever. Also mother and father don’t let me explore in the new back garden because it is ‘out of bounds’. What ever that means. There’s nothing to explore in the front garden either because it’s so small. Perplexed, I stood and gazed through my bedroom window. There were so many farmers working on one huge field with little huts that disappeared into the distance†¦ The thing that horrified me most of all was that even kids starting from the age of about 4 were working and they looked so anorexic. Each time the soldiers shouted the kids would huddle closer and closer together. They all seemed so scared as if they were being forced to, hmmm†¦ All of the farmers looked really skinny, almost anorexic. One of the farmers’ even works in our kitchen peeling all of the vegetables. I found it really tedious with nothing to do so I decided to make a swing. To make the swing I needed some rope which was easy to find, and a tire which was a little trickier†¦ I interrupted Gretel whilst she was flirting so I could ask lieutenant Kotler if he had a spare tire. After a long and boring chat he gave me one and I made my swing. Once I had finished building the swing, I enjoyed it really well. But then I fell and hurt my knee really bad. I thought I would bleed to death but then a farmer called Pavel that worked in our kitchen ran over and helped me. After he had cleaned and bandaged my cut mother had finally arrived. She had figured out what happened almost immediately, she did not look pleased.

The whole plan was fabricated by Lyra’s uncle, Asriel who was actually the child’s real father. One day while hiding in a cupboard, she overhears conversation about a plot to poison her uncle Lord Asriel, who was later revealed to be her father. When she tells him about the plot to kill him, he ascribes it to his plan to go to the frozen north, which is frowned upon by the professors. Lyras adventurous spirit is awakened and she too wishes to follow him, but before she can do that she is sent to live in London with Mrs. Coulter, a high society lady, who buys her beautiful clothes and tells her tales about the North. Mrs. Coulter is in fact Lyras own mother, a fact unknown to the young girl. Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are two of the strongest characters in this novel, and they are the ones whose influence is most seen on Lyra.
